This week, to mark the 40th anniversary of May 13 1969, we speak with Hassan Muthalib, who was a witness to the violent racial clashes in the heart of Kuala Lumpur on that fateful day, as well as the trying and difficult days that followed. In 1969, Hassan was a 23-year old bachelor and aspiring filmmaker living in Kampung Baru. His experiences of May 13 are also presented in his photographs below - made available to the public for the first time. Hassan Muthalib is a self-taught artist, designer, animator, film director & writer. He is responsible for many of the most-loved animations on Malaysian television, including the infamous Sang Kancil cartoon.
