Malaysian independent filmmakers have been creating waves on the international film festival circuit for several years now. Yet there is still a struggle for audiences and recognition at home. We speak with Dutchman Gertjan Zuilhof, a longtime programmer at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and passionate observer of South-East Asian cinema. He anticipates the opportunities and challenges facing the development of Malaysian film, and talks about the need to develop a new generation of indie filmmakers. Gertjan Zuilhof is a programmer at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, who showcased South East Asian filmmakers in thematic sidebars such asS.E.A Eyes, 2005 and White Light 2006. He is also part of the selection committee of the Hubert Bals Fund, a foundation that gives financial support to filmmakers from developing countries.

We speak with Dutchman Gertjan Zuilhof, a longtime programmer at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and passionate observer of South-East Asian cinema.
