The Fairly Current Show

#50 Hatim Abdullah

For many (urban and suburban) Malaysians, crime incidences appear to be a constant, endemic national problem. As an attempt at curbing crime in their neighbourhoods, many suburbs have either been wholly developed as gated communities or, for those established before the trend, are finding an increased need to become gated. Yet is this the sole solution? This week we speak with Hatim Abdullah, a community volunteer and organiser in the once-plush (and now apparently ripe for criminal pickings) neighbourhood of Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, about the community's attempts at transforming itself into a gated community. Hatim Abdullah is a community volunteer and organiser, and has lived in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, KL, since 1984.
