The Bukit Bintang Girls' School (BBGS), founded in 1893, was a pioneer of women’s education in Malaysia. Although the school no longer stands on Jalan Bukit Bintang (it was relocated to Taman Shamelin in 2001 and renamed SMK Seri Bintang Utara), the BBGS spirit continues to live on in many of its former students. On August 4 2009, many ex-BBGS students and their families will gather at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur (which occupies the land where BBGS used to be). They will be there to witness the launch of the Elena Cooke Education Fund, named in honour of the last of the school's pioneering headmistresses. We speak with BBGSians Cheong Wei Lee and Meera Samanther to find out more, and to get their thoughts on the changes in language and education. Cheong Wei Lee is the Vice-President of the Bukit Bintang Girls' School Old Girls' Association. Meera Samanther is the President of Women's Aid Organisation. For more information and to pledge to the Fund, call the hotline 017-8719357, or email back2bbgs@gmail.com.
